Darkness into Light

College and Beyond

You went to a place where you did not know what you would find

You were expected but nothing was in place so

You depended on what you were given which was more than you had

Much less than you needed or wanted but so much more than it could have been

For the very first time you acknowledged just how poor you were

How damaged you were became apparent not only to all

For the first time you had to deal with where you had come from

Who you were was not who was needed in this place

There was no way for you to fit in but you tried

Your voice was still your gift and numbers were your escape

Family even poorer than you visited and dark memories came flooding back

An incredible year that could have been so wonderful never had a chance

You returned to a place that saw you as a failure and yet you were only at the start

In a moment of darkness, you almost went the wrong way

In a moment of Light, you met the gift of Light

What was to be your path to the Light became your hope for more

You did not know what was happening and could not even understand it

It was to be the beginning of your movement from darkness into light

You did not realize that you would venture even further into darkness

Darkness is not something that relents its mighty hold easily

Darkness fights t o control and it is so very difficult to escape

Even as you acknowledge darkness is where you are at

You took someone with you into the void

Yet

Eventually both of you together reached sunlight and joy

It seemed impossible at times but now you know

Although it wasn’t what you had hoped for, it was your path

It was an incredible journey from darkness into Light

A journey that would last your entire life

A journey that no one else could make yet you drug others with you

A journey that finally found the warmth of the sun

There is light at the end and in the middle of deep dark night

So long and hard to get there yet you are determined!
