Utah
We have driven Interstate 15 from the southernmost point of Utah all the way to Idaho
We have driven Interstate 80 across through Salt Lake City and to Wyoming
In recent years, St. George has become the city of refuge and rest for us as we tend to stay there often
St. George is a pretty neat city where we have sat and had great conversations with young Mormon's at a local fast food place
They want to know what you think as well as sharing their thoughts about almost everything
St. George is the jumping off city for Zion National Park which is a place we have many wonderful memories of
We once camped there with our children and played for hours in a rushing small stream
We have seen deer, and neat coyotes in Zion and we have walked past the Grotto and Weeping Rock all the way to the river
We have been to Zion in the winter when it was surprisingly pleasant and in the summer when it was very hot
Driving out through the tunnels, well yes, we have stopped in the tunnels and taken pictures and never held up traffic
We have taken beautiful blooming cactus pictures on the way to the tunnels and out of the Park
Zion is a most wonderful place to visit and see and experience
Staying in Springdale we have taken in the theatre and enjoyed a good rock and roll show
We also have looked at the elk, long horn cattle and other animals at the park there
We also have visited Colorado City which is really in two states and is the polygamy city and yes we talked with polygamous families
We have spent the night in Kanab and we have gone up the wooded landscape into the north rim of the Grand Canyon
A most special route that we only discovered a few years ago is highway 12 which takes you through the most scenic of areas
First there is the drive through a red rock canyon area and then on to Bryce Canyon which is a spectacular place and we have taken many pictures
Before you get to the turn off to Bryce you drive through a wonderful huge arch over the entire road
Again we almost always stop to take pictures
The arches in Bryce are even better, we think than in Arches National Park which is also wonderful
We have watched the sun rise and the sun set in Bryce and it is easily one of the most overlooked and beautiful of national parks
Traveling further east on" the journey through time highway", you mosey on through Escalante and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument which is fascinating
Even further you drive through narrow passes where a surprise coffee shop awaits you and then up and on to a road that has steep drop offs on each side
It really is a "rim" road and it is exciting but fun to drive
Taking highway 24 east at the junction with highway 12, you continue through Hanksville and then turn up to I-70 for the run into Moab and Arches NP
The drive into Hanksville takes you through another NP - Capital Reef and it is also quite beautiful
We describe the drive from Hanksville to I-70 as Zachery Land as it is barren and rock filled with no service areas
Arches NP is a long winding road and you can see many arches from the park highway but it is also a crowed hot area and much can be seen only by walking a good distance
The I-70 drive is much faster and also quite scenic but doesn't compare with highway 12 which we have taken both ways
There is a highway that runs north south parallel to I-15 up through Richfield and it is a very pretty drive
There is a rest area just before you get to St. George where we have spent the night and it is also very nice
Driving through the St. George Gorge is a faster but similar drive as the Poudre River Canyon drive near Ft. Collins, Colorado
It is equally beautiful and much more rocky with less views and a much fast traffic speed
The drive north through Provo past the Utah Lake takes you past a scenic valley
Salt Lake City is a place where you can get great Chinese food and we have often
It is also the home of the Mormon Faith and we have visited the Mormon Visitor Center and taken pictures of weddings as the bridal party leaves the Great Temple
We have been dismayed by the traffic in Salt Lake City but sometimes it isn't so bad
The drive into Salt Lake City from Nevada takes you past the Bonneville Salt Flats and we have stopped at a viewing area across from it and take pictures
We also observed our first polygamous family at that same location
They kept to themselves and did not speak even with a greeting from us
We did not think the Great Salt Lake was all that pretty but it is impressive
You can drive to Yellowstone by driving through Logan which we have done just so we could see the area
This was a very pretty drive and worth seeing
The drive up and out of Salt Lake city takes you into a mountainous skiing area and is very scenic
We once drove into Salt Lake City via a back road that was dirt and gravel
We came this way from Dinosaur National Park actually by accident and exploring and it was very isolated and quite a beautiful drive
We have also driven from Green River to Vernal the back way and this was a long but pretty drive also
While driving highway 12, we have also been held up by modern day cowboys driving cattle on this road and coming down one of the passes is a great red barn
Utah is filled with more memories than we originally though and certainly is a gorgeous state
We once drove highway 50 out of Colorado and into Nevada and we remember talking with a young woman whose father had been excommunicated from the Mormon Church
I should also point out that although we can't find the pictures; we have been to and taken our pictures spread eagled at Four Corners where we actually touched four states at one time
We revisited Utah in June of 2011 spending several days in Moab touring Arches NP and
Canyon lands NP. We had a great time! Dead Horse Point was beautiful!
At the Thelma and Louise Point, I re proposed on our 46th wedding Anniversary!
We camped with very nice people and
we took 4 wheel drive trips
It was
an exciting and fun filled time! You can see the road we drove up and from to
the top and then back down again!
We walked to Landscape Arch and took pictures
We took pictures of Delicate Arch.
We took a boat trip down the Colorado
and saw ancient Indian drawings on rock walls.
We really enjoyed our extended visit and the “Tag-a-long” agency drivers who
Treated us as though we were VIP’s. Utah is a fabulous state- one of our very
favourites!
